Over the weekend, Venezuelan carrier Conviasa inaugurated services from Caracas to Moscow Vnukovo Airport. A delegation of government officials from the country was on board the flight.

According to ruaviation.com, the route "has good potential, both in terms of development of economic cooperation and cultural exchange between our countries".

Commenting on the news was the head of the Federal Air Transport Agency, Alexander Neradko, who congratulated the airline and Venezuela for this new route.

"On behalf of the aviation authorities of the Russian Federation, I support the decision of the Venezuelan airline Conviasa and the aviation authorities of Venezuela to start flights to Moscow!"

"I wish the Venezuelan airline Conviasa a successful launch! Let it follow by the successful partnership and cooperation with Vnukovo International Airport. Let every step be accompanied by success; let your work be clear and, most importantly, safe. And I would like to wish your passengers a pleasant trip and say: "Fly Conviasa airlines!". Good luck!"

The service will be operated once every two weeks to start with, before heading up to twice per week in the near future.

The aircraft of choice from the carrier is its Airbus A340 family aircraft, which will provide a direct connection with Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, and Mexico.

Late last night, our social media team posted about the movement of this flight, with the assumption that this service was a one-off.

With this new news, we can now expect to see more Conviasa aircraft flying through European airspace going into the future.

From a political perspective, the launch of this new route will come as no surprise, given the close ties that the two countries have, especially with Venezuela being Russia's most important trading and military ally in Latin America.

It will be interesting to see how far this route will develop, and whether this will be the beginning of further international operations further afield for Conviasa.
