According to our statistics page, the seven-day rolling average for total commercial traffic has risen by 28% compared to 2021.

As recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the industry is definitely heading in the right direction when it comes to this.

So without further ado, let's get into the numbers...

The Numbers

The Image Above: Total commercial traffic statistics based on a seven-day rolling average.

For August 13-20, around 100,508 commercial flights operated, which is a +28.02% increase compared to the same period in 2021, when only 78,509 flights were operated.

Such a figure is also better than 2020's statistics, where 62,360 flights were operated. The significant growth can be seen in the table, with the industry needing to find around 14,000 flights to get back to pre-pandemic levels.

That shouldn't be a hard figure to hit, especially as we head into the new summer season in 2023.

Below, you can see the last four weeks' worth of data to see the respective increases:

  • July 16-23 - 99,855 movements - +20.95% increase.
  • July 23-30 - 100,115 movements - +20.48% increase.
  • July 30-August 6 - 100,138 movements - +24.65% increase.
  • August 6-13 - 100,295 movements - +27.31% increase.

Overall...

It remains clear that traffic numbers are on the up and up, but with more external pressures on the way, this will no doubt have some form of distortion on the numbers moving forward.

From Ukraine, all the way through to the Cost of Living Crisis with inflation affecting the globe, this could reduce consumer spending in the sector.

It's going to be interesting to see how the industry is going to cope in the months ahead, and whether we will see numbers continue to rise or not.

If they don't in the Winter, then the same could be for the Summer 2023 season.
