As Coronavirus pandemic evolves, airlines brace for historic disruptions
Airlines outlined deep cuts to their flight schedules as the coronavirus provokes an industry crisis that’s shaping up to be worse than the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Here is the summary of decisions took by airlines in order to fight the crisis:
- Air France, British Airways, Ryanair, easyJet... suspends all flights to Italy; Spain suspends all air traffic with Italy
- Lufthansa Group grounds 20% of its fleet and reduces capacity by 50% in the coming weeks
- Iran Air suspends all flight operations to European destinations until further notice
- Alitalia suspends all flights to/from Milan Malpensa airport
- Virgin Atlantic retires its A340-600 fleet earlier than expected
- Qantas grounds 8 A380s and reduces capacity by 25% for the next six months
- Korean Air grounds 100 aircraft (including all A380 fleet) and warns that the coronavirus could threaten its survival
- Kuwait suspends all commercials flights until further notice
- U.S. ban travel from most European countries due to coronavirus pandemic
- European Commission suspends airport slot rules to avoid ‘ghost flights’
- Italy shuts down Rome Ciampino International airport
- Norwegian Air to temporary layoff 50% of employees
- Emirates grounds 8 A380s and delays the delivery of its final Superjumbos
- KLM retires its Boeing 747’s fleet by end of this month, well earlier than expected
- American Airlines retires part of Boeing and 767 fleet earlier than expected
- Delta grounds up to 300 aircraft and reduces operations by 40%
